About the Geolinguistic Society of Japan

The Geolinguistic Society of Japan was founded in April 2019. The definition of "geo-linguistics" is based on traditional word-by-word dialect geography, but also includes sociolinguistic elements such as age differences and links with related fields such as human geography, natural geography, genetics, and archaeology. We also take a multilingual typological treatment and language contact into consideration. It is a society specializing in linguistic geography, dealing not only with the Japanese language, but also with other languages of the world. The society does not adopt a membership system, but is open to a wide range of researchers and graduate students, including those from other countries, through a simple activity style.
